The First of the Big Block Stingrays (C-3) 1968 saw the unveiling of the new Corvette Stingray (C-3)€”or as it was popularly known initially, the Shark€”which was a totally redesigned body style. This styling would last through 14 model years (1968-1982). Our 1968 was built with the big block 427 cid/390 hp engine, making it a worthy competitor of the European sports cars, several of which were twice as expensive. Sold by Barrett-Jackson as €œBrochure€ Car Our customer bought this 1968 Corvette €œSales Brochure Car€ at Barrett-Jackson€™s Palm Beach auction in 2006 for the sum of $52,430. The car was featured at Barrett-Jackson as one of the cars used in the Corvette sales brochure which was distributed to dealers for the 1969 model year. The purchaser has now asked us to sell this remarkable Corvette on his behalf. Our 1968: first Purchased by GM reportedly to be one of the €™69 Corvette €œBrochure€ Cars Our €™68 Stingray was built in April of 1968 and immediately invoiced over to GM Tech Center (we have a copy of the transfer document). The history of the car suggests it was to be used as one of the display cars in the showroom brochure for the 1969 Corvette. Since Rally Red, the original color of our Corvette was not being offered in 1969, the car is reported to have been repainted in Monza Red€”a €˜69 Corvette color. It appears that some other interior and exterior enhancements were made to correspond to the new 1969 offering. (Copies of all available documentation€”some primary and others secondary€”are being provided as part of the sale price of this car, which was represented to the purchaser at Barrett-Jackson as one of the Corvette brochure cars. A copy of the €™69 brochure is included as well.) A Well-documented Corvette For those of you who value documentation of service and restoration, you will love this Corvette. We have several folders with receipts of repairs; pictures of the restoration done in 1998; materials from GM regarding the purchase by their Tech Center along with after-the-fact statements regarding its authenticity; and sale documents from Barrett-Jackson describing its €œsales brochure€ background. Rarely has so much been written about one 1968 Corvette! A Great Example of the €™68 Model € Exterior The car was repainted in its second €œoriginal€ exterior finish, Monza Red, during the 1998 restoration with a high-quality respray and the paint looks almost as fresh today as it did then. The car has only a few road nicks (touched up), and appears to have been continuously garaged. The trim is in good condition as is the glass. The t-tops, which store behind the seats when not in use, are in excellent condition and install/remove effortlessly with new seals which still are a little squeaky. € Interior The interior is finished in tan€”upholstery and carpeting€”that is in very good condition and looks great against the red exterior. There is a slight sign of wear (see picture) where the seat belts hit the edge of the bolster. The carpeting and door panels are all in very good condition as well. Mechanicals € Engine This 427 V-8 is rated at 390 hp, which gives this pre-emission engine lots of power to sprint down the road. The engine runs properly through all parts of its power curve making for exciting acceleration and a great driving experience. € Transmission The 3-speed automatic transmission is smooth shifting and properly tames the 390 horses that are under the hood. Limited slip completes the package, so acceleration is quick but predictable. Safety Equipment & Entertainment This Corvette is equipped with power steering and power 4-wheel disc brakes, making driving both enjoyable and safe. Naturally all of the safety equipment (lights, signals, wipers, horn) works properly as well. The pop-up headlights work correctly and the car has an AM/FM push-button radio that works. The clock is restored but not yet hooked up. The car is currently equipped with Rally wheels and Firestone F70 x 15 bias ply redlines with plenty of tread left (the original hubcaps are included as well). They Don€™t get much Nicer If you have always wanted an early C-3 with only 75,863 miles on the clock, this is your chance to get a great car at a significant discount from the price paid at Barrett-Jackson! This Corvette with its more than ample power plant will put a smile on your face as you are pressed back in the seat while looking at the Fords and Mopars disappearing in your rear-view mirror!
